Qualification Description

Management of Diabetes

The Management of Diabetes (Non Accredited) course is designed to provide disability and care workers with the knowledge and confidence to support individuals living with diabetes safely and effectively. The course focuses on understanding diabetes, daily support requirements, monitoring, risk management, documentation, and escalation, while reinforcing the importance of working within scope of practice and under appropriate clinical delegation.

This training supports workers to follow individual diabetes management plans and organisational policies, ensuring participants receive safe, consistent, and person centred support.

This course is non accredited and does not replace clinical training or authorise independent clinical decision making.

Course Content

You will cover the following elements: Identifying manual tasks involving risk, Preparing for manual tasks, Completing manual tasks and Contributing to safe work practices.

  • Minimum age : 18 years
  • Basic English literacy and communication skills
  • Working or intending to work in disability or aged care services

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance from Bright Lilly College.
This certificate does not replace nationally recognised training or permit independent diabetes management or clinical intervention.

This course is suitable for:

  • Disability Support Workers
  • Support staff working with participants who have diabetes
  • Workers in SIL, respite, and community settings
  • New and existing staff requiring diabetes awareness and management skills

  • Delivered by experienced registered nurses
  • Strong focus on safety, compliance, and risk management
  • Practical, disability specific training
  • Person centred approach aligned with NDIS Practice Standards
  • Trusted training provider within the disability sector

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Support individuals to manage diabetes safely in daily activities
  • Recognise early warning signs of low or high blood glucose
  • Follow individualised diabetes management plans
  • Respond appropriately to diabetes related incidents
  • Document support accurately and professionally
  • Escalate concerns promptly and appropriately

Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • Overview of diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, and other forms – support worker level)
  • Causes, risk factors, and long term implications of diabetes
  • Roles, responsibilities, and scope of practice
  • Individual diabetes management and support plans
  • Blood glucose monitoring (support role awareness)
  • Recognising signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
  • Nutrition, hydration, and lifestyle considerations in disability support
  • Medication awareness, including insulin and oral hypoglycaemics (non clinical)
  • Managing diabetes during illness or changes in routine
  • Responding to diabetes related emergencies
  • Documentation and incident reporting
  • When and how to escalate concerns to nurses, supervisors, or emergency services

Enrolment

  • Enrolment is confirmed once payment is received in full.
  • Participants must provide accurate personal details at enrolment.
  • Bright Lilly College reserves the right to refuse enrolment at its discretion.

Fees and Payments

  • Course fees must be paid prior to course commencement unless otherwise agreed in writing.
  • All prices are in Australian Dollars (AUD).
  • Fees are subject to change without prior notice.

Cancellations and Refunds

  • Cancellations made 7 days or more before the course date may be eligible for a refund or transfer.
  • Cancellations made less than 7 days before the course are non refundable.
  • Non attendance on the day will result in forfeiture of fees.
  • In exceptional circumstances, Bright Lilly College may consider credit or transfer at its discretion.

Course Changes

  • Bright Lilly College reserves the right to reschedule or cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances or low enrolments.
  • If a course is cancelled by Bright Lilly College, participants will be offered a full refund or transfer to another date.

Attendance and Participation

  • Full attendance and active participation are required to receive a Certificate of Attendance.
  • Late arrivals or early departures may impact certification.

Non Accredited Training Disclaimer

  • This course is non accredited and does not lead to a nationally recognised qualification or unit of competency.
  • Completion does not authorise participants to administer medication independently.
  • Participants must always work under organisational policies, delegation, and supervision.

Workplace Responsibility

  • It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure workers are competent, supervised, and working within their scope of practice.
  • Bright Lilly College is not responsible for workplace decisions related to medication delegation.

Health and Safety

  • Participants must comply with all health and safety instructions during training.
  • Any health conditions that may affect participation should be disclosed prior to training.
Privacy

  • Personal information is collected and stored in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
  • Information will only be used for training and administrative purposes.

Code of Conduct

  • Participants are expected to behave respectfully and professionally.
  • Bright Lilly College reserves the right to remove participants for inappropriate behaviour without refund.

Acceptance of Terms

  • By enrolling, participants acknowledge they have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms and Conditions.
