This Nationally Recognised Training Unit of Competency describes the skills and knowledge required to handle the tasks in a safe manner. This unit applies to all workers involved in manual handling tasks. The unit HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely is contextualised to the Aged Care/Allied Health setting.
You will cover the following elements:
Identifying manual tasks involving risk, Preparing for manual tasks, Completing manual tasks and Contributing to safe work practices.
1. Introduction to manual handling
2. Legislation
3. Duty of care
4. Risk factors
5. How to control risks
6. Preventing injuries
7. Basic anatomy and physiology of the spine
8. Correct postures
Practical Includes:
1. Pre-start exercises
2. Log rolls
3. Use of slide sheets
4. Use of a full hoist or standing hoist in a variety of situations
Entry Requirements:
There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you
must:
1. Reside in Western Australia;
2. Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan);
3. Provide a copy of your passport or photo identification.
4. Be at least 18 years of age.
5. The unit of competency standards requires a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment.
6. Due to the potential risk to health and safety, any worker who does not have the physical ability to meet the competencies standards of assessment will not be issued a Statement of Attainment.
