Qualification Description

Catheter Care

The Catheter Care (Non Accredited) course is designed to equip support workers with the knowledge and confidence to safely assist individuals who require urinary catheter support as part of their daily care. The course emphasises safe assistance, infection prevention, dignity, documentation, and escalation, ensuring participants work strictly within their scope of practice and follow individual catheter care plans.

This training recognises catheter care as a high intensity personal support task and highlights the importance of clinical oversight, consent, and risk management in disability and aged care settings.

This course is non accredited and does not authorise independent clinical decision making or catheter insertion, removal, or replacement.

Course Content

You will cover the following elements: Identifying manual tasks involving risk, Preparing for manual tasks, Completing manual tasks and Contributing to safe work practices.

  • Minimum age : 18 years
  • Basic English literacy and communication skills
  • Currently working or intending to work in disability or aged care services

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance from Bright Lilly College.
This certificate does not replace nationally recognised training or permit independent catheter procedures.

This course is suitable for:

  • Disability Support Workers
  • Support staff assisting participants with indwelling or intermittent catheters
  • Workers in SIL, respite, and community settings
  • Staff supporting participants with neurological conditions, ABI, SCI, or complex care needs

  • Delivered by experienced registered nurses
  • Strong focus on high intensity disability support
  • Practical, respectful, and realistic training
  • Emphasis on safety, dignity, and compliance
  • Trusted provider within the disability sector

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assist with catheter care safely under supervision
  • Maintain hygiene and infection control standards
  • Preserve dignity and comfort during catheter support
  • Identify early signs of complications
  • Document catheter care accurately
  • Escalate catheter related concerns promptly

Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • Overview of urinary system and catheter use (support worker level)
  • Types of urinary catheters (IDC, SPC, intermittent – awareness level)
  • Roles, responsibilities, and scope of practice
  • Consent, dignity, privacy, and cultural sensitivity
  • Reading and following individual catheter care plans
  • Daily catheter care and hygiene support
  • Safe positioning and manual handling considerations
  • Infection prevention and use of PPE
  • Recognising signs of infection, blockage, leakage, or discomfort
  • Fluid balance awareness and basic monitoring
  • Documentation and incident reporting
  • When and how to escalate concerns to nurses or supervisors

Fees and Payments

  • Course fees must be paid prior to course commencement unless otherwise agreed in writing.
  • All prices are in Australian Dollars (AUD).
  • Fees are subject to change without prior notice.

Cancellations and Refunds

  • Cancellations made 7 days or more before the course date may be eligible for a refund or transfer.
  • Cancellations made less than 7 days before the course are non refundable.
  • Non attendance on the day will result in forfeiture of fees.
  • In exceptional circumstances, Bright Lilly College may consider credit or transfer at its discretion.

Course Changes

  • Bright Lilly College reserves the right to reschedule or cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances or low enrolments.
  • If a course is cancelled by Bright Lilly College, participants will be offered a full refund or transfer to another date.

Attendance and Participation

  • Full attendance and active participation are required to receive a Certificate of Attendance.
  • Late arrivals or early departures may impact certification.

Non Accredited Training Disclaimer

  • This course is non accredited and does not lead to a nationally recognised qualification or unit of competency.
  • Completion does not authorise participants to administer medication independently.
  • Participants must always work under organisational policies, delegation, and supervision.

Workplace Responsibility

  • It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure workers are competent, supervised, and working within their scope of practice.
  • Bright Lilly College is not responsible for workplace decisions related to medication delegation.

Health and Safety

  • Participants must comply with all health and safety instructions during training.
  • Any health conditions that may affect participation should be disclosed prior to training.
Privacy

  • Personal information is collected and stored in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
  • Information will only be used for training and administrative purposes.

Code of Conduct

  • Participants are expected to behave respectfully and professionally.
  • Bright Lilly College reserves the right to remove participants for inappropriate behaviour without refund.
